Juliet Dove is an amazing heroine that will delight both male and female audiences with her tenacity and intelligence. Knowing how to get out of the story is only part of the challenge - the other part is finding the courage to do what has to be done to get out! In the process she sets out to correct an ancient wrong, and to reunite Cupid and Psyche. Unfortunately, things only go from bad to worse when Juliet discovers that she has become enmeshed in a mythical story of truly epic proportions - with only one way out. Jerome and Roxanne, two talking rats, come to her rescue as they try their best to help her extricate herself from her unusual predicament. A task that is harder than one would imagine for once Juliet put it on, it became unremovable. While Juliet might not understand why she is suddenly the love interest of so many young boys, she knows one thing for certain - she has to find a way to turn their focus away from her, and find a way to take off the amulet. Before she knows what is happening she finds herself the center of attention of a host of lovesick boys!

The book's laudable message, however, is clearly delineated, and as kind, loyal Jennifer endures a poor self-image, one hopes readers will see the light.
Coville's ( Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher ) comical classroom scenes lapse into a convoluted web involving Bufo's long-lost sweetheart and the belabored idea that pulchritude denotes cruelty unattractiveness, humanity. When a gorgeous witch kidnaps Jennifer's youngest sibling, her evil intentions are thwarted by teamwork-and by Jennifer's sacrifices that reveal qualities surpassing mere beauty. At school the canny amphibian inflicts vengeance on Sharra, a nasty classmate. After purchasing a toad from a mysterious shopkeeper Jennifer is amazed to discover that not only can Bufo talk, he can mimic voices unerringly.
Jennifer, a fifth-grader, agonizes over her appearance-``I'm just a kid in the plain brown wrapper''-and her schoolmates' taunts are doubly painful. This fanciful story questions the value of beauty yet spins out of control after a promising start.
